What does that new diamond-shaped sign mean on the roads?
New signs around Europe, previously unknown, are becoming ever more common
The European Union has been making an effort for years to unify road safety regulations throughout Europe, including signs, traffic regulations and even sanctions.
If all goes according to plan, one of the first measures will be the creation of a common digital driving licence for the whole of Europe, including Spain.
For this reason, Europe is making an effort to adopt common traffic signals for the whole of Europe.
France leads the way in this sector of adopting international road signs. Spain has always followed suit in the past as with the points-based driving licence or the new modifications that will affect motorcycle licences.
Diamond-shaped sign
For this reason, it is worth knowing about this new diamond-shaped roadsign that has been officially in operation in France for about a year, and which could soon be hitting the Spanish roads.
The sign refers to shared-use lanes, i.e. similar to HOV (high-occupancy vehicle) lanes. The sign allows cars occupied by more than one person to circulate on them, as well as electric vehicles with a Zero rating.
In France, they are already operating in cities such as Paris and Nimes, where they have thermal cameras that check that cars are actually occupied by more than one person.
In this case, and as explained by the French equivalent of Spain’s DGT, it is advisable to know the timetables and the type of operation of these, since these shared-use lanes may change direction or even use depending on the time.
