Wet and windy weekend ahead with chance of thunderstorms: Alicante weather May 18-21
The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has issued a yellow alert for heavy rain in the north of Alicante province on Friday
The outlook for the weekend in Alicante is in stark contrast to the recent weeks with the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) forecasting a sharp dip in temperatures, wind, rain and occasional thunder and lightning storms.
In fact, Aemet has issued a yellow alert for risk of heavy rain in the north of the province on Friday.
Rainfall is expected to be more intense in this area, which covers the regions of El Comtat, Marina Alta and Marina Baixa, with accumulated rainfall that could reach 20 litres per m2 in an hour. However, rainfall has not been ruled out elsewhere.
Thursday May 18 will get off to a damp start following overnight rain in parts, with cloudy skies likely for most of the day. Showers are also likely, with occasional thunderstorms which may be locally heavy. In the early hours of the morning, they will mainly affect the coastline, and from midday onwards spread to other parts. The mercury will fall, topping out at 22ºC in Alicante city.
In fact, Thursday's weather will begin a cycle of unstable wet weather that is expected to last until the middle of next week.

Alicante: 15ºC to 22ºC
Denia: 13ºC to 21ºC
Elche: 14ºC to 22ºC
Orihuela: 14ºC to 22ºC
Aemet has issued a yellow alert for heavy rain on Friday May 19, and according to meteorologists, this rainfall is more likely in northern inland areas in the afternoon, although it could occur at any point. In the morning, there will be intervals of cloud, and the skies will gradually become overcast as the hours go by, ahead of showers in the afternoon, possibly accompanied by electrical storms. It will also feel blustery, particularly on the coast.
Alcoy: 9ºC to 19ºC
Alicante: 13ºC to 21ºC
Denia: 12ºC to 21ºC
Elche: 12ºC to 21ºC
Orihuela: 12ºC to 21ºC
Saturday May 20 is also shaping up to be cloudy and overcast with showers expected in the afternoon, particularly in the north of the province, less likely elsewhere. Maximum temperatures will rise, but only by 2 or 3ºC, and a moderate easterly wind will make its presence felt, especially along the coast.
