Wearing underpants beneath your swimming costume: yes or no?
A Spanish nurse answers the age-old question about wearing briefs to the beach
For most of us, going to the beach or for a dip in the pool is an excuse to strip off and cool down, but a surprising number of people still opt to don underwear beneath their swimsuits. There’s a variety of reasons, from keeping the sand away from those delicate areas to protecting one’s modesty in skimpier costumes.
But one Spanish nurse with more than 5.3 million followers recently took to TikTok to advise bathers that, from a health perspective, it’s really not a good idea to wear briefs under swimming costumes.
The main reason, Jorge Ángel explained, is that while swimsuits are made from breathable material designed to dry quickly, underpants will remain wet long after you leave the water, creating “more moisture and more risk of fungus” forming.
Probably not the beach souvenir most people have in mind.
However, despite the unquestionable logic, the nurse’s warning has divided his followers, with many social media users insisting they will continue to wear boxers to the beach, if only to stop the irritating sand from rubbing against the skin.
Many more swimmers complained that the mesh commonly found on the inside of bathing trunks is unbearably uncomfortable. “That fabric is deadly,” one commented.
On this point Jorge Ángel was forced to agree, adding that he could not understand “how they have not invented something different.”
