ARCHIVED - Wave of 20 burglaries sparks fear among residents in 3 neighbouring Aliante towns
In some cases, occupants were at home and threatened when the burglar struck in Rojales, Formentera and Benijófar
A spate of house burglaries and car break-ins has sparked fear and panic among residents in three neighbouring Alicante towns, and prompted an emergency meeting of Local Police and Guardia Civil to put a stop the crime spree.
In the last three weeks, 20 homes and cars have been targeted in Rojales, Formentera and Benijófar, in several cases when the occupants were actually at home and were threatened.
Understandably, residents are extremely concerned, and have expressed their fears to the local authorities, prompting assurances from one town mayor that everything is being done to catch whoever is responsible.
According to police sources, it's believed one person with addiction problems is behind the wave of break-ins, "someone who does not care that the houses are occupied and who threatens the residents to steal valuables and money".
The suspect has climbing skills and "does not over-plan his assaults".
The crime spree has forced a meeting of the mayors of Rojales, Formentera del Segura and Benijófar, Antonio Pérez, Francisco Cano and Luis Rodríguez respectively, together with the Lieutenant Commander of Almoradí Guardia Civil barracks, Juan Sebastián Martínez, and other police and council representatives.
During this week's meeting at Rojales Town Hall, it was agreed to "coordinate in a special way" investigations by the Local Police and Guardia Civil, and "put an end to the wave of robberies that are causing great concern among the citizens of the three towns".
The police and council also conveyed a message of "calm" and "assurance" to the public that "investigations to resolve the current situation are well underway".
Anybody who hears or witnesses any suspicious or strange behaviour is asked to contact the Local Police or Guardia Civil immediately.
The telephone numbers are:
Rojales: 966 715 129
Formentera del Segura: 966 792 699
Benijófar: 651 856 248
Almoradí Guardia Civil: 965700128
