Watch the video: Fury in Torrevieja as jet ski filmed harassing dolphins
The person who filmed the clip in the Costa Blanca cove says the dolphins were being chased and deliberately spooked
A video doing the rounds on social media has caused absolute outrage in Torrevieja after footage emerged of a jet ski pulling up close to a group of dolphins swimming in the coves area.
The clip was posted on Instagram by the person who filmed it, who says he visits the coves regularly and happened to spot the dolphins splashing around in the distance that day. What started as an exciting sighting quickly turned into something that left him deeply uncomfortable.
"When dolphins and a jet ski appear in the same video, nothing good can come of it," he says in the recording, going on to accuse the two people on the jet ski of actively chasing the animals and getting far too close for comfort.
"I don't know what we're doing wrong for Torrevieja to be in this state." "Today has been an afternoon full of dolphins and a lot of misfortune." he added.
Thankfully, the video ends with the dolphins swimming away.
While marine creatures and pleasure crafts have to coexist, there are a few general rules of thumb that experts have taken the opportunity to remind beachgoers about. When encountering dolphins, jet skis and boats should always maintain a safe distance and try to avoid manoeuvres that might disturb them. These include chasing the mammals, blocking their path or accelerating when close to them.
