ARCHIVED - WATCH: succession of forest fires rips through Murcia
The blazes in Lorca and El Valle broke out within 15 minutes of each other

All of Spain is experiencing unusually high temperatures over the last few weeks and this heat, together with a marked lack of rain, has brought forward the typical forest fire season. A blaze in eastern Spain, spanning Castellón and Teruel, has been going strong for more than a week, resulting in the evacuation of thousands of people while in the Murcian municipality of Cieza, a wildfire was tackled mercifully quickly, but not before scorching through 6,200 square metres of agricultural land.

Firefighters in the Region of Murcia were again kept busy this weekend, answering call-outs to two major blazes that broke out almost simultaneously. The first fire was reported at 6.45pm on Sunday April 2 in the Lorca district of La Paca.
Several worried locals put in calls to the Murcia Region 112 Emergency Coordination Centre, which responded by sending two helicopters, three forestry brigades, five environmental agents and several firefighters to the scene.
Their rapid action brought the blaze quickly under control.
Meanwhile, in Valle Perdido in the Murcian district of La Alberca, another unit rushed to tackle a forest fire in the Sierra del Puerto at around 7pm. The emergency services were notified by residents who reported a large plume of black smoke in the area.
A helicopter from the General Directorate for Citizen Security and Emergencies, a helicopter, two land forestry brigades, three environmental agents and firefighters from the Murcia City Council Fire Fighting Service travelled to La Alberca and the fire was stabilised by 7.30pm.
