ARCHIVED - Volunteer dog walkers sought by Benissa, Alicante animal sanctuary
Benissa-based AKIRA shelter, in the Marina Alta, Alicante province, desperately needs animal lovers to help exercise rescue dogs
Dog lovers are being sought by Akira Animal Sanctuary, which rescues and re-homes abandoned canines in the Benissa, Teulada and Moraira area of Alicante, to walk some of its residents.
Based on the La Pedrera industrial estate in Benissa, the non-profit organisation is appealing for volunteer dog walkers who can visit the shelter during open hours and take a canine or two for a stroll.
‘Walking is great for both human and dog as the dog gets some much needed mental stimulation and the human gets some exercise. We advise wearing appropriate footwear (not flip flops) as the terrain is uneven in places,’ says AKIRA in a Facebook post.
The charity was set up in Benissa in April 2011 after animal lovers noticed a need for a shelter in the area, and began to meet with the town councils with a view to securing suitable land, planning the construction and build of Akira shelter, whilst raising awareness.
Founders and board members came up against a series of problems before the sanctuary was finally completed and opened its doors five years later.
Anybody interested in becoming a volunteer dog walker can visit the shelter from Monday to Sunday, between 9.30am and 4pm, call 657 689 567 or email akirashelter@aol.com
Elsewhere in Alicante province, Almoradi Council has teamed up with Somos Humanymal Association to launch Azanza-Dogs Project, to assist young people at risk of social exclusion.
