ARCHIVED - Violent criminal who targeted Mazarron businesses arrested in Totana
The thief robbed establishments in Lorca, Alhama de Murcia and Mazarrón before escaping on his motorbike
Since December 2021, the authorities have been investigating a thief who has robbed at least seven business in the Region of Murcia, including in Mazarrón, and officers finally detained a Totana man this week after finding evidence which linked him to the crimes.
The first incident took place on December 30, when a public establishment in the municipality of Mazarrón was violently broken into by a motorcyclist wearing a helmet. Petrol stations, pharmacies and perfume shops in Lorca and Alhama de Murcia were also targeted.
Several robberies carried out using the same modus operandi made police suspect that the crimes were the work of a careful serial thief. First, the thief parked a rented van in the vicinity of the building he was about to rob, then he unloaded his motorcycle, which had no license plate, from the van and donned a helmet to cover his face. Then he threatened employees with a knife while demanding money from the cash register.
Afterwards, the individual returned to the van, loaded his motorbike and fled the scene at incredibly high speeds, making it difficult for the police to track him down.
Eventually, Guardia Civil officers connected the crimes to a Totana local and, after raiding his property, they found the motorbike, helmet and other items used during the robberies, such as gloves and sunglasses.
The man has since been arrested on suspicion of crimes of robbery with violence and intimidation and the police believe that he may be responsible for other robberies in the Region.
