Villas Caravaning beach reopened to swimmers
The water had been off limits earlier in the week due to the presence of E. coli
The Civil Protection Service of the City Council of Cartagena reopened the beach of Villas Caravaning to bathing this Thursday July 17 after the Environmental Health Service of the Directorate General of Public Health and Addictions of the Ministry of Health of the Region of Murcia confirmed that the water is safe for swimming in.
Swimming was banned on this Mar Menor beach on Wednesday 16 after analysis of samples taken on Monday 14 indicated the presence of Escherichia coli at a value of 500 cfu/100 mL, which exceeded the permitted limits safe for humans.
After analysis of a subsequent sample taken on Tuesday 15, it was found that these levels had fallen to normal levels of 70 cfu/100 mL, and the decision was taken to reopen the beach in time for the weekend.
A statement from Cartagena City Council read, “Municipal technicians visited the area to try to locate the source of the particles, without being able to determine their origin clearly.”
