Villajoyosa replaces its Moors and Christians castle for public safety reasons
The castle traditionally used for the Villajoyosa festivities failed to meet safety requirements
Concerns over public safety has forced Villajoyosa Town Hall to invest in a new Moors and Christians castle after the existing structure failed to meet rigid risk assessments.
The emblematic castle traditionally used during the annual festivities didn't pass strict safety requirements, and the local authority is already working on building a replacement fortress with a new model that "guarantees the safety of participants and spectators during the Moors and Christians Festival".
Isabel Perona, acting Councillor of the Departments of Festivities and Public Safety, explained: "The safety of our festeros, festerteras and citizens in general is an absolute priority. Therefore, the council and different organising entities are committed to ensuring that all infrastructures and spaces used in our festivities strictly comply with safety regulations."
In addition to safeguarding the public, the Town Hall also wants to "preserve the essence and character" of the festival castle, and has already received several proposals for a replacement, with one in particular the current front runner.
"The Consistory will make a significant investment in order to ensure that the new castle has a safe, quality and durable structure for subsequent celebrations," added the council.
