ARCHIVED - VIDEO: Two metre shark spotted battling the waves on a beach in Mallorca
The blue shark was sighted off at Cala Llombards in the Mallorca town of Santanyi
Footage of a two-metre blue shark swimming close to Cala Llombards in Santanyi, Mallorca, and reaching the shoreline before heading back out to sea has gone viral.
Several beachgoers sighted the shark in shallow waters, struggling against the waves, with one witness capturing a clip and posting it on social media.
There have been a number of sightings of blue sharks over the years off the coast of Mallorca. The species, Prionace Glauca or Tintorera, as it is known in Spain, is a large, predatory species of shark found within temperate and tropical marine ecosystems.
While this particular species is not considered to be aggressive, it is potentially dangerous to humans and has been implicated in several unprovoked attacks.
Typically quite lethargic, the blue shark can move very fast and have large litters of between 25 and 100 pups.
Their diet is made up predominantly of squid and small fish, although they have been known to feed on larger prey, and they have a lifespan of up to 20 years.
In the last 50 years, blue shark populations have declined in the Atlantic and Indian oceans, and they have increased only slightly in the Pacific Ocean.
Earlier this year, a massive 13-foot shark washed up dead on a beach in Torrevieja.
