ARCHIVED - VIDEO: Torrevieja man falls down a well trying to rescue trapped dog
A massive rescue operation was launched to retrieve the man and dog from the bottom of the well at Torrevieja lagoons

Half a dozen Alicante firefighters, the Guardia Civil and Local Police were involved in a dramatic rescue at Torrevieja lagoons after a man fell into a six-metre well trying to rescue a trapped dog.
According to official sources, the dog plunged into the well first and a kind-hearted passerby walking along an area between La Siesta and El Chaparral urbanisations heard its incessant barking and realised the dog was trapped, so tried to rescue it, only to fall and become trapped himself.

The alarm was raised at 2.10pm on Monday February 7, and a delicate rescue operation was put into action, firstly by lowering a police canine unit kennel small enough to get into the mouth of the well to lift the dog to safety.

Firefighters then used an extendable ladder to rescue the man.
Both were said to be in "good condition" and didn't require medical assistance.
However, concerns have been raised about the fact the well was not marked or fenced off, despite the fact that the Confederación Hidrográfica del Segura (Segura Hydrographic Confederation) has carried out intensive work in recent years to seal up abandoned wells.
