Holidaymakers arriving at Spain’s Palma Airport in Mallorca on Tuesday afternoon, June 24, were met with shock and confusion when part of the roof in the arrivals area suddenly collapsed.
The incident happened at around 4.30pm, sending glass and other debris crashing down onto vending machines near the baggage reclaim zone.
Fortunately, no one was injured, though several people had been using the vending machines at the time. Witnesses described the moment as “a miracle”, given how serious the incident could have been.
Airport operator AENA said debris from ongoing construction work had fallen onto a glass roof, shattering the protective glass and causing the partial collapse. Security teams quickly cordoned off the area and redirected arriving passengers.
The incident comes amid ongoing complaints from airport staff about safety concerns linked to building works. There have been other minor incidents in recent weeks, but none have led to injury. An investigation is now underway to establish what happened and whether proper safety measures were in place.
