VIDEO: Kayaker fights off huge shark in the Canary Islands
The man fended off the enormous hammerhead in the waters near La Palma
Qué angustia‼️ Tiburón martillo 🦈 se acerca a un kayak en la costa de #Tazacorte (me pasaron el video por un grupo, no sé quién lo grabó, pero no me hubiera gustado estar en su piel)

In a terrifying encounter, a local man found himself face-to-face with a hammerhead shark off the coast of La Palma in the Canary Islands. The dramatic video, which has left viewers on the edge of their seats, shows the kayaker using his paddle as a makeshift defence against the shark's advances.
The incident occurred in the tourist hotspot of Tazacorte, a municipality in the western part of the island known for its breathtaking views.
The bather, who was enjoying a peaceful day on the water, suddenly found himself being circled by the shark. As the enormous animal drew closer, the kayaker's panic became evident, and he began to use his paddle to ward off the creature.
Footage shows the shark, which looks like a hammerhead, circling the kayak before making a beeline for the man. In a desperate bid to protect himself, the kayaker uses his paddle to push and hit the shark, shouting “B*****d, get away.”
After several tense moments, the shark finally retreats, leaving the kayaker shaken but unharmed.
Although several news outlets have identified the shark as a hammerhead, this hasn’t been confirmed by the experts and despite their fearsome appearance, hammerheads are actually quite shy and rarely a threat to humans. It’s more common for them to swim away than attack.
However, this gentle giant can often be confused with a separate species called the great hammerhead, Sphyrna mokarran, which is more aggressive.
This incident is made all the more terrifying as it comes just weeks after a 30-year-old German woman lost her life in a shark attack off the coast of Western Sahara. The woman, who was on a British pleasure craft called Dalliance Chichester around 500 kilometres from the Canary Islands, suffered a fatal cardiac arrest after having her leg bitten off by the shark.
