ARCHIVED - Vega Baja steps up call for independence from Valencia
The Vega Baja independence platform believes Murcia may join the cause
A social movement in the Vega Baja demanding independence from the Valencian Community has begun to gather steam and the call for signatures supporting an economic separation has been met with a strong response. Arguments have abounded for years that the income generated by the area’s tourism activities fails to make its way back to the coastal towns, and the latest cry of “No to Valencia, Orihuela independence” is not falling on deaf ears.
The platform has now, in fact, found supporters in the Vega Media del Segura and its advocates believe that the movement will gain traction in the Region of Murcia, with suggestions that a new Autonomous Community could well be developed between Murcia and Alicante.
Senior members of the platform maintain that negotiations have thus far not proved fruitful, and have in recent days called for more refinancing options and greater defence of the Tajo-Segura water supply canal. The possibility of establishing a provincial entity within one of the autonomous administrations has also been put on the table as an intermediate step, in which case an Orihuela Provincial Council could eventually be constituted.
