ARCHIVED - Valencia health department gets social media savvy
The Valencia region's Ministry of Health has launched new social media profiles to connect with young adults and teenagers

The Valencia Region's Ministry of Health has stepped up its social media presence with the launch of Facebook and Instagram (GVA Sanitat) profiles in order to connect with teenagers and young adults and counteract "fake news".
"Social networks have enormous potential as a tool for dissemination and information. In fact, in some age groups, it is the only source of information that is consulted to keep abreast of what is happening in the world, and so we too must also explore these channels," explained the region's Health Minister, Ana Barceló.
The two new social media profiles also aim to ensure factual information is being shared to counteract "potential false news".
"As we are seeing with the pandemic, fake news has proliferated and it is crucial to clear these matters up. People need to be able to get information from official and reliable sources, and by expanding our channels of communication by being on Facebook and Instagram, we are addressing that need within the young adult and youth sectors of the population," added Barceló.
The new social networks, in particular Instagram, will adopt a more "casual and visual tone", whilst maintaining the "informative rigour" currently offered by the GVA on Twitter and Youtube.
The region's Ministry of Health Twitter profile was created 10 years ago, and has more than 85,600 followers.
"The number of followers has grown exponentially during the pandemic; for example, in the last 28 days almost 800 new users have joined. In the same period, there have been 61,900 impressions per day and a daily average of 86 retweets without comments and 173 'likes'," claims the health department.
And in January 2020, Regional Ministry of Universal Health and Public Health launched on Youtube, sharing Covid information, recreations of how to act in the event of a cardiorespiratory arrest, and video tutorials on how to request an appointment through the GVA+Salut APP, amongst other content.
