ARCHIVED - Valencia axe attack: Pro-Russia Ukrainian and compatriot seriously hurt in fight over the war
One of the men lost an eye and is in a serious condition in Valencia's La Fe Hospital
A 45-year-old pro-Russian Ukrainian and a compatriot, 61, have been arrested following a violent axe attack in Valencia sparked by their differing views over the heavily condemned invasion of their home country.
The 61-year-old, who remains in a serious condition in the city's La Fe Hospital, lost an eye in the vicious brawl and had to undergo further surgery having sustained a fractured skull.
The pro-Russia Ukrainian also suffered injuries inflicted with the same axe during the fight, according to police sources, and required medical attention.
National Police officers arrested both men whilst an investigation is carried out.
The horrific incident occurred at around 9pm on Sunday March 6 at a flat in Calle Padre Urbano, in the Valencian neighbourhood of San Antoni, where two Ukrainian men, known only as S. and A., live.
According to police sources, two other Ukrainians visited the flat on Sunday evening, a 45-year-old, identified as I.T., and another man whose identity has not yet been ascertained.
Both visitors were apparently drinking for "quite some time" with A. and chatting before the conversation turned to Russia's invasion of Ukraine. The three became embroiled in a "bitter argument that escalated" when A. who defended Ukrainian President Volodymir Zelenski for his resistance to the Russians, allegedly went in search of a weapon.
He returned with an axe with a half-metre handle and allegedly attacked I., a supporter of Putin and his invasion of Ukraine, causing head injuries.
The unidentified visitor and I. managed to disarm A. after which I. is said to have struck A. several times in the head and eye before his flatmate called the emergency services.
When police arrived at the blood-stained flat, they discovered a candlestick that had also been used to cause severe wounds and arrested both injured men who each claimed the other had struck the first blow.
