Until January 6 The Belén de España in San Javier
One of the largest nativity scenes in Spain in the centre of San Javier
The word “monumental” is used to describe many of the nativity scenes which are set up every year in the Region of Murcia, but the one in the Plaza de España in San Javier is arguably more deserving of the adjective than any other on account not only of its plethora of models of local buildings but also of its sheer size.
Occupying an area of over 500 square metres in the open square and containing around 2,000 figures, it is now 55 years since the project started – and still it continues to grow. This year it officially opens on Saturday December 23 at 20.00 under the auspices of Don Gabriel, the parish priest in San Javier half a century ago, as well as local dignitaries including Councillor David Martínez, who is overseeing the montage this year.
Sr Martínez has been seen helping with the finishing touches on December 22, in the company of the Belén director, José Antonio Garnés, ensuring that all of the tableaux representing the farmland of Murcia and the Campo de Cartagena are perfectly in place.
New figures this year include a group of date pickers and a remodelling of the homes around the crib, while special attention has been paid to the Mysteries created by artisan Jesús Griñán.
Attending the opening on Saturday evening will be the “Rocieros del Alba” choir among others, and the whole of the local population is invited to enjoy this most traditional of attractions over the festive season.
