Car insurance is a legal requirement in both Spain and the UK, yet the systems in place in each country operate in very different ways. These differences can be seen in how policies are structured, the cost of cover and the level of protection provided.

In the UK, insurance is typically attached to the driver rather than the car. Policies often allow for multiple named drivers and provide different levels of protection, such as third party, third party fire and theft or fully comprehensive cover.

The no claims bonus system is well established in the UK and plays a major role in reducing premiums for those with a record of safe driving. Despite this, more often than not, premiums in the UK are considerably higher than in Spain, particularly for younger drivers.

Spain takes a different approach, with insurance generally linked to the vehicle rather than the individual. This allows any licensed driver with the owner’s permission to use the insured car legally, which can be practical for households where more than one person drives the same vehicle.

Insurers may still adjust the premium or set conditions depending on the age or driving history of those using the car. It is important to note that this type of cover does not extend to situations where the vehicle is hired out for financial gain i.e. as a rental car, as this would invalidate the policy.

As mentioned above, policies in Spain also tend to be cheaper than in the UK. A lower incidence of claims and a less litigious culture both contribute to this difference.

As in the UK, drivers in Spain can choose between third party and comprehensive cover, but the details of what is included can vary considerably between insurers. Roadside assistance is very often built into policies in Spain, something that is not always the case in the UK.

Another important distinction is that the UK operates the Motor Insurers’ Bureau, which compensates victims of accidents involving uninsured drivers. Spain does not have an equivalent scheme, which means that personal legal cover becomes more important for motorists there.

Ultimately, although the systems are very different, both the UK and Spain share the same aim of protecting drivers and other road users. For anyone relocating or spending time abroad, understanding these contrasts is vital to ensuring that their vehicle is properly insured and that they remain on the right side of the law.
