Ukrainian man gunned down in Alicante town
The man was shot five times at a home in Villajoyosa
The quiet Alicante town of Villajoyosa, close to Benidorm, has been shocked to its core following the violent slaying of a 33-year-old Ukrainian man, whose body was discovered on the afternoon of Tuesday February 13 outside the garage of a home in the La Cala area.
A neighbour discovered the body and raised the alarm. Initial assessments indicate that the man sustained multiple gunshot wounds, with estimates suggesting anywhere between five and a dozen shots were fired. However, a thorough postmortem will be conducted to determine the precise number of bullets that struck the victim.
Investigators have since located a burned-out vehicle in El Campello that fled the scene after the murder and was spotted by the neighbour who discovered the body.
It appears that the shooting took place in the basement of a house, but the victim attempted to escape and made it to the exit ramp of the parking lot before collapsing. The discovery of the body was reported to Emergency 112 at around 5pm, and patrols from the Guardia Civil and Local Police of Villajoyosa, along with health services, quickly responded to the scene. Unfortunately, the person was pronounced dead upon arrival.
The small urbanisation is still reeling from the incident, but most of its residents don’t think that the victim was local.
“There are few of us living here all year round, there are many second homes,” one local said.
“I don’t think he lived here,” he added. “I have seen him sometimes in the last few days but he was working doing a job.”
Other neighbours have pointed out that “many foreigners live in the urbanisation”, most of them from Eastern European countries such as Ukraine or Russia.
