ARCHIVED - Ukrainian refugee family robbed of 10,000-euro life-savings in Alicante
Two Algerian men have been remanded in prison for the theft near San Juan beach on the Costa Blanca
A Ukrainian family forced to flee the Russian invasion and seek refuge in Alicante was robbed of 10,000-euro life-savings and passports after being targeted by two men near San Juan beach.
As the father sat in the car waiting for his wife and son to leave a store in Avenida Santander at around 3pm on Friday June 3, a man approached the vehicle and asked for directions, according to police sources.
Meanwhile, his accomplice opened a rear door and grabbed a bag containing cash made up of euros and dollars along with passports, a mobile phone and credit card.
The National Police was alerted and two suspects were located the same day. House searches were carried out and in addition to finding the stolen cash and other items, police seized 130 grams of hashish and 111 grams of crystal meth.
The Scientific Police Unit was also able to extract fingerprints from one of the thieves inside the victims' car and the two suspects were arrested. Both have previous convictions, one had been released from prison earlier this year and the other had a previous suspended sentence.
They have been charged with theft and drug trafficking and, due to "the particularly vulnerable situation in which the victims were left", the Public Prosecutors' Office requested they be remanded in prison.
