ARCHIVED - UK government continues to warn against travelling to Spain
Although the Spanish government has lifted all travel restrictions, the UK is continuing to remind tourists not to travel to countries on the amber list unless absolutely necessary
On Monday (May 24), the British Secretary of State, Anne-Marie Trevelyan, warned against travelling to Spain, and other countries on the amber list, except in cases of emergency, following the lifting of restrictions for British tourists.
In a statement on Sky News, Trevelyan reminded the public that the prime minister been “very clear” in stating that British people should not be travelling to countries on the amber list for a holiday, including Spain, Italy and France.
According to the “traffic light” system, travelling to a country on the amber list means ten days of self-isolating upon returning to Britain and having to pay for at least two Covid tests. Those returning from a country on the red list have to complete their ten days of isolation in a government approved hotel.
Travellers returning from countries on the green list don´t have to self-isolate when they return home. The only European country currently on this list is Portugal.
The Secretary of State went on to say that the countries on the amber list "don´t meet the scientific requirements to be included on the green list at the moment" and she reiterated that the government strongly recommends avoiding travel to these countries unless absolutely necessary.
However, the Secretary of Tourism in Spain, Fernando Valdés, is hopeful that the advancing vaccination campaign and the low incidence rate in several parts of the country will mean that Spain is included on the green list at the next review on June 7.
He also mentioned that some places in Spain, such as the Balearic Islands, the Costa Blanca or Málaga, have very similar incidence rates to those in the United Kingdom.
Following the lifting of some travel restrictions from Monday (May 24), people from countries from outside of the European Union considered to be safe, including the United Kingdom and Australia, will be able to enter Spain without a negative PCR test and without needing to quarantine.
Always check the Spain entry requirements on the UK Government website before travelling to ensure that you comply fully with the new arrangements for entering Spain post-Brexit.Click here
