Uber arrives in Murcia
Expansion within the region is coming soon
As of today it is possible to travel around Murcia via the Uber app. Users can request Taxi and UberX services through the application. The platform is operated with VTC vehicles, the most popular product on the platform.
The Murcian capital is the fourteenth Spanish City in which Uber operates. To begin with the platform will operate with thirty licences, although the objective is to continue expanding the service.
The arrival of Uber will be met with open arms by many in the city who demanded more options of transport. The platform is looking to strengthen the fleet of traditional taxis, as well as that of other more private services such as Cabify, present in Murcia since 2019.
“With this launch, we continue to reaffirm our commitment to Spain and the taxi sector. We want to work closely with the taxi and VTC sector in Murcia”. Stated Lola Vilas, the director of Uber in Spain.
With this launch of Uber within Murcia, The platform is expanding its geographic footprint in Spain, and the app is now available in fifteen cities: Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, Seville, Malaga, Bilbao, Granada, Mallorca, Tenerife, Zaragoza, Ibiza, Elche, Alicante, Santander and, as of today, Murcia.
In parallel to its expansion strategy in Spain, Uber has made its commitment to sustainability a priority, to become a zero-emission mobility platform by 2030 in Europe.
The president of the Regional Federation of Hospitality and Tourism Entrepreneurs of Murcia (HoyTú), Jesús Jiménez, indicates that the sector values ”very positively the launch of Uber in our city”.Furthermore, Jiménez hopes that the launch of the service will improve the experience of those who choose Murcia as a destination to visit.
To use the service, the customer must download the application, register and indicate a payment method. Once logged in, they must indicate the destination and then the fixed price of the trip will be displayed. When a driver accepts their request, the application will show the waiting time until the pick-up as well as the vehicle and driver data.
To communicate with the driver before pickup, the user can use the in-app chat or call anonymously. Upon arrival at the destination, the user will receive a receipt for their trip in their email and will be able to download their invoice.
The price of UberX will be set at 0.2 euros per minute and 0.98 euros per kilometre. The base price is 2 euros. The minimum price is 4.8 euros. The cancellation fee is 4.8 euros.
In addition to the mobility service, the company also offers the possibility of booking train tickets through its app to and from Murcia, as well as renting cars through its Uber Rent service. Uber Eats, Uber's home delivery app, is available in the city and offers a wide selection of restaurants, supermarkets and convenience stores.
