Two arrests made in Spain after shocking cases of dog abuse
Neglected dog euthanised in Gran Canaria and stolen greyhounds found mutilated and in poor conditions in Seville

The distressing situation came to light on July 16, when an anonymous tip alerted officers that a dog was in critical condition and had been brought to a veterinary clinic in Carrizal. Veterinary examinations revealed the dog was suffering from 7% dehydration, indicating prolonged neglect, and a large ulcerated mammary mass complicated by internal infection. A larval infestation had developed in the wound, causing intense pain for at least three days. The decision to humanely end the dog’s suffering was taken after it became clear recovery was impossible.
The case has now been forwarded to the Telde Duty Court and the Las Palmas Environmental Prosecutor's Office as authorities pursue legal accountability for the severe mistreatment.
Meanwhile, in Seville, the Guardia Civil has arrested a couple suspected of stealing two prized racing greyhounds from Villanueva del Ariscal. The investigation, dubbed Operation "Alxaraf Lebreles," was launched after the theft was reported by the property owner. Shockingly, the stolen greyhounds were found at a property on the outskirts of Seville in a kennel described as being in very poor and unsanitary condition.
Even more disturbingly, the animals had been mutilated, their thumbs on the front legs had been cut off, which experts say is a cruel practice sometimes used to make racing dogs faster but is illegal and cruel.
The suspects are believed to be part of a regional criminal group specialising in stealing racing dogs, often targeting properties during local festivals when owners are away.
The Guardia Civil have stressed the severity of this abuse and the importance of cracking down on groups perpetuating animal cruelty for profit.
These disturbing incidents highlight the serious issue of animal mistreatment that authorities in Spain continue to confront. Officials remain committed to investigating and prosecuting those responsible to safeguard animal welfare.
