ARCHIVED - Tram links between Orihuela, Torrevieja and Alicante-Elche airport in the pipeline
The Valencia Government plans to carry out a study to improve rail connections in the Vega Baja region of Alicante province

President of the Valencia Government, Ximo Puig, announced a package of measures including tax reforms and free rail and bus transport for under 30s until the end of the year this week, the latter of which will be of no or little benefit to the 400,000 people living in the Vega Baja since the region doesn't currently have a means of transport operated directly by the Generalitat.
However, this could change in coming years. In addition to the reforms, during his speech at the Valencia Parliament on Tuesday September 27, Puig also revealed that the government plans to carry out a survey to improve rail connections in the Vega Baja with the intention of creating tram links between Orihuela and Torrevieja, and another line from Torrevieja to Alicante-Elche airport.
Although the president made it clear the aim is to extend Metrovalencia and Alicante TRAM services, operated by Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat Valenciana, into the Vega Baja, no further information, such as timeline or budget, has been divulged.
What has been confirmed is that the transport measures would be part of the Vega Renhace Plan which promotes sustainable urban mobility.
Elsewhere in Alicante province, a study into a new rail link between Denia and Gandia in the Marina Alta region is also being put out to tender.
In other transport news, Renfe announced this week that the AVE train service between Valencia and Sevilla will be restored from October 7, with two trains a day, one in each direction, offering passengers the chance to travel between the two cities in just four hours.
