Torrevieja and Crevillente hit by earthquakes just hours apart
Seismic movement was recorded in two Alicante towns in the Vega Baja region on Wednesday morning
Alicante province registered two earthquakes just hours apart in the Vega Baja towns of Torrevieja and Crevillente on Wednesday morning.
The first occurred in Crevillente at 2.59am of 1.6 magnitude at a depth of 19 km, according to the National Geographic Institute of Seismology.
The second, off the coast of Torrevieja, registered 2.6 on the Richter scale and was 4km deep. There have been no reports of material damage.
In March, the coastal town was struck by three earthquakes in the space of 24 hours, the strongest of magnitude 3.1. Residents reported feeling the quake in the neighbouring towns of Guardamar del Segura, Orihuela Costa, Los Montesinos, San Fulgencio and Rojales.
Alicante province, and in particular the Vega Baja region, is an area of "significant" seismic risk, and has experienced three "catastrophic" historical earthquakes, the most recent of which occurred in Torrevieja in the 19th century.
