ARCHIVED - Torrevieja closes off part of beach to protect Kentish Plover nesting site
Torrevieja council is safeguarding a Kentish Plover nesting site at La Mata beach in the province of Alicante.
After the successful nesting of the Kentish Plover (Charadrius alexandrinus) in Torrevieja's Municipal Natural Park 'Molino del Agua' last year, the council has stepped up measures to protect the species' nesting site.
The bird, which lays its nests on the sand, is in danger due to the disappearance of beaches with dune systems.
This year the bird is nesting on the La Mata beach, the longest beach in the Torrevieja municipality, so to make the area more compatible for breeding, part of the beach has been temporarily fenced off until the breeding period is over.
La Mata beach retained its coveted Blue Flag this year, and one of the criteria for the award is that an active program for the conservation of biodiversity is in place.
"Because of its size and dull colours, the Kentish Plover is a bird difficult to detect, so it is very important not to cross the temporarily fenced area, and even try to stay away from it as much as possible when walking or sunbathing," said Torrevieja Council, which has teamed up with the government's Wildlife Service to protect the area.
Dog owners are also asked to keep their pets on a lead on La Mata beach and in the natural park, as "loose dogs are one of the main threats to the bird".
At the end of the breeding season, the protection measures will be evaluated so that a conservation plan can be put in place before next year.
The Kentish Plover is a small and charismatic wader of the Charadriidae family that breeds on the shores of saline lakes, lagoons, and coasts, populating sand dunes and marshes.
They are ground-nesting birds, often with a preference for low, open, moist nesting sites away from thick vegetation and human activity.
