The UK retiree living it up in a Murcia nursing home
71-year-old David Cowling shows how it’s done at the Caser Residencial Santo Ángel retirement care home
What happens when pensioners who move out to Spain need extra nursing home care or elderly care? Is it possible to find services aimed at expats that offers retirement care in their language?
This was the problem faced by David Cowling. David came to Balsicas, Murcia when he was 64, emigrating from his home in Cheshire.
Now aged 71, David came to live at the Caser Residencial Santo Ángel centre in Murcia capital city after his social worker at the Virgen de la Arrixaca Hospital contacted his children and told them about the centre’s specialist International Unit.
“She showed us photographs,” recalls David. “My children visited the Unit and loved it.”
So what is the experience of living in the bright and modern International Unit like?
“My experience is very positive in all aspects,” David says. “Every day we have breakfasts adapted to our tastes, needs and customs. We do daily activities but for me the most important one is physiotherapy, where I go every day.
“We also have television and international press.”
But when asked what they like most about the International Unit, the answers of residents were revealing as to what makes the place truly special.
“It’s the whole team at the centre, from the assistants to the technical team. The most important thing is that we can communicate with our friends as well as with the team and that my family has continuous contact with the staff of the Unit.”
David summed up his opinion of the International Unit at Murcia’s Caser Residencial Santo Ángel succinctly: “Of course I would recommend it to everyone I know because it is a very pleasant and friendly place!”
