The Torre del Reloj, the clock tower of Yecla
The Yecla clock tower previously belonged to a church in the Plaza Mayor
The clock tower of Yecla stands in the Plaza Mayor, in the heart of the old town, between the old granary (or “Pósito) and the former meat and fish market which has now been converted into the municipal auditorium.
Originally this was the bell-tower of the church dedicated to Nuestra Señora de las Nieves, consecrated in 1605, but in the 19th century the church made way for the Lonja market and the tower was left to stand on its own, fulfilling the important role of informing locals of the time of day. It now overlooks the collection of baroque and Renaissance buildings in the Plaza Mayor, including the Palacio de los Alarcos, the Town Hall, the granary and the tourist information office.
If visiting Yecla don’t forget to make sure one of your first ports of call is the tourist office (Plaza Mayor, 1, telephone 968 754104, email turismo@yecla.es).
