Swimmer rescued at Cartagena beach after ignoring red flag
Red and yellow flags have been hoisted across the Mar Menor due to adverse sea conditions

A careless bather had a lucky escape in Cartagena on Monday August 28 as dedicated lifeguards risked their own safety to pull him from the treacherous waves at Barco Perdido beach in La Manga.
According to local sources, the bather went in the water despite a red flag clearly being displayed, which strictly prohibits swimming, and ignored the repeated calls of lifeguards to return to shore. They eventually had to swim out and pull him back to safety.
To make matters worse, witnesses claim the man entered the water with an inflatable, which put him at even more risk from the waves and wind.
Two Cartagena beaches are flying red flags on Monday due to strong currents while several more have hoisted yellow flags, which advise extreme caution in the water.
Following the foolhardy incident, officers from the Local Police and Civil Protection travelled to the beach to speak with the swimmer, who could be fined for failing to observe the warnings.
