ARCHIVED - Sudden sinkhole in Murcia city causes more road closures
Murcia police have warned motorists to drive carefully due to storm damage on the roads
Local Police in Murcia capital city have closed the traffic on the Camino de Tiñosa due to a large sinkhole that appeared yesterday on the way up to the Reguerón bridge, near the district of Los Dolores and the village of Beniaján.
The sudden sinking of this piece of road shocked people living in the area, who placed boxes around the hole to warn drivers of the danger until the emergency services arrived.
Several of those present warned of the risk posed by this hole in the road, especially due to its size: “There’s room for a car, it’s very dangerous,” said one.
Police have asked drivers who travel along this road to exercise extreme caution and use alternative routes where possible.
This is the second sinkhole that has emerged on the Murcian roads in as many weeks, after a chunk was torn out of the RM-E22 road between Cartagena and Isla Plana by falling debris because of the heavy rainfall.
In that case, the hole in the road was caused by a retaining wall the collapsed, but in Beniaján the incident road was almost more dramatic because the road gave way of its own accord.
Thankfully, the weather will start to improve later this week, with heavy rain and thunderstorms only present in the Murcia Region on Wednesday, so hopefully we won’t see too many more dangerous episodes like this.
