ARCHIVED - Spanish regions bring forward second vaccines for patients in their 60s amidst variant concerns
Madrid, Galicia and Andalusia have decided to bring second doses of AstraZeneca vaccines forward for those in the 60-69 age group amid concerns over the Delta variant of Covid.
Three Spanish regions have decided to give patients in their 60s who were given the coronavirus vaccine by AstraZeneca their second doses ahead of time, the health authorities have announced.
Although second doses of the vaccine for this age group are scheduled for 12 weeks after their first, Madrid and Galicia will now be administering them in week 11 and Andalusia in week 10 in light of concerns over the highly contagious Delta variant of coronavirus.
Since AstraZeneca was the vaccine of choice for the 60-69 age group, and given the long wait between doses, it is currently lagging behind in terms of getting patients fully inoculated, meaning that getting their second doses administered is becoming a priority.
Although the Spanish Ministry of Health has said that the Delta or Indian variant of Covid-19 accounts for only around five per cent of new cases, Madrid and Andalusia have both expressed concerns about the possibility of an explosion of new cases as the variant is particularly contagious. The regional Health Minister in Madrid has warned that the variant is 40 per cent more contagious than the British (Alpha) variant and could cause a rapid spike in cases.
