ARCHIVED - Spanish government vows to invest 300 million euros in Mar Menor
The regional president of Murcia is sceptical that any funds have been allocated to the recovery of the lagoon
The Minister of Energy Transition and Demographic Challenge in Spain, Teresa Ribera, this week guaranteed that the central government will invest “more than 300 million” euros in the Mar Menor, where a recent episode of anoxia caused thousands of dead fish to wash up on the shores of the lagoon.
Despite the Minister’s assurances, the Murcian president, Fernando Lopez Miras, remains incredibly sceptical, insisting that he has combed through every inch of the General Budgets and is yet to find any mention of specific spending for the Region. He has accused the Spanish government of discriminating against Murcia in general and the Mar Menor in particular, criticising the fact that it is already November and not a cent of the promised 300 million between 2021 and 2023 has been allocated.
Ms Ribera hit back by claiming that no geographically referenced items appear anywhere in the budget but that she plans to visit the Region of Murcia on Thursday November 4 to present the actions to be carried out in support of the recovery of the Mar Menor.
For his part, Mr Miras responded that if the plans come to fruition, the Minister will find a regional government more than willing to work with her, but reiterated the need for the discharges travelling to the Mar Menor through the Rambla del Albujon aquifer to be immediately addressed as it is currently the main culprit for “poisoning” the lagoon.
