ARCHIVED - Spanish coronavirus incidence rate falls again but analysts fear the downward trend is slowing
The strain on hospitals continues to ease as 28.7 per cent of the population are fully vaccinated against Covid-19
The latest daily update published by the Ministry of Health on Thursday evening reported a further slight fall in the 14-day coronavirus incidence rate in Spain as it reached 96.6 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, and with the immunization campaign progressing rapidly the official accumulated death toll since the pandemic reached this country rose by just 19 to 80,634.
However, analysts have expressed some concern that the 7-day figure rate rose slightly to 43.2, still under half of the 14-day figure but perhaps an indication that the downward trend which has been observed since last April may be slowing.
There is still considerable variation among the regional data but the differences are gradually becoming smaller, and in only four regions is this principal indicator still above 100: Andalucía (177), La Rioja (155 after a drop of 10 per cent in 24 hours), the Basque Country (127) and Navarra (108). At the other end of the scale are Ceuta (36.8), the Comunidad Valenciana (39.5), the Balearics (40), Galicia (40.45), and Murcia (48.3).
Thursday’s bulletin includes another 4,197 confirmed new cases – there have now been just over 3.75 million since the pandemic reached Spain early last year with a positive testing rate of 3.7 per cent, well below the WHO guideline of 5 per cent.
In addition, the number of Covid patients receiving hospital treatment fell below 3,000 and they now account for 2.4 per cent of all occupied beds, while in intensive care units the equivalent figure has dropped below 9 per cent (8.89%).
Vaccination data
In the meantime, the number of people to have received the full dose of immunization vaccines in Spain has risen to just over 13.64 million, equating to 28.7 per cent of the population, and it is hoped that the figure will reach 15 million by the end of the week.
The 22.36 million to have received at least one vaccine dose represent 47.1 per cent of the entire population, and the target of fully immunizing 70 per cent by the end of the summer remains within reach if current vaccination levels can be maintained.
