ARCHIVED - Spain braces itself for a polar blast this December holiday
Winter has arrived in Spain, with lower than average rainfall predicted for December
The first holiday of the month in Spain is fast approaching on December 6, and the previous weekend is when many people traditionally begin their shopping and festive preparations. But with much of the country blanketed in snow in recent days, what does the weather hold in store for us?
The short answer is a rather mixed bag, as temperatures, rainfall and snow levels will all be determined by an Azores anticyclone and where it decides to touch down, according to meteorological experts from Meteored.
Between Wednesday and Friday, December 1 and 3, the temperatures will once again plummet due to the arrival of a polar air mass, and northern areas expect more heavy rain and snow.
Moving into the weekend, a new weather front should calm the rain in northern and central areas, with Mediterranean coastal communities expected to be mostly dry.
December Bank Holiday
Come Constitution Day on Monday December 6, the anticyclone will creep closer to land, driving the rain back up to the north and the Balearic Islands, but by Immaculate Conception Day on December 8, temperatures are forecast to drop even further all across Spain.
In most of Spain, the rainfall will remain below average during the days of the December bridge, but frigid temperatures of between 1 and 3 degrees are predicted for Galicia, while the mercury could dip below 1 degree in the Balearic and Canary Islands.
Winter weather predictions
The winter in general is expected to be warmer than usual in Spain, with temperatures predicted to be between 0.5 degrees and 1 degree warmer than average during December, January and February. The month of December should see slightly less rainfall and things will be about average in January, but February will bring a big change, with the Region of Murcia, Alicante and the eastern part of Almeria braced for more rainfall than other years.
