ARCHIVED - Spain to swelter in temperatures of up to 40 degrees Celsius this week
Intense midsummer heat and tropical nights are expected this week.
After a week of rain, storms and hail, the summer heat is set to arrive in full force across Spain this week with sizzling temperatures of up to 40 degrees Celsius in parts.
Spain's State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) recorded 23,000 lightning strikes across the country between Saturday and Sunday (June 5 and 6), but this looks set to be replaced by intense midsummer heat and tropical nights - although the odd storm and shower hasn't been ruled out.
Most of Spain has seen glorious summer temperatures today (Monday, June 7) which are likely to last until at least Friday, when the more widespread arrival of storms and increased atmospheric instability is expected, according to Aemet.
While tomorrow is forecast to be "a day of stable weather", skies will generally be a little cloudy with possible showers and thunderstorms later in the day, especially in the north of the Valencia region, south of Aragon and northeast of Castilla-La Mancha.
However, temperatures will still reach between 32 and 38 degrees Celsius across most of the country.
Localised showers could be strong and accompanied by hail and an intense easterly wind will blow in the Strait with strong gusts in the Canary Islands where temperatures could reach 34 degrees Celsius.
Wednesday and Thursday look set to follow the same trend, accompanied by "tropical nights" particularly in the west, centre and south of the Peninsula, Andalucia and the Canary Islands.
Overall, Aemet predicts that maximum temperatures will be between five and 10 degrees Celsius above normal in much of the west, centre and northeast of the Peninsula, as well as in the south.
"The intense heat of midsummer will continue, especially in the west, centre and south of the Peninsula, and will even touch 40ºC in some parts of the Guadalquivir valley (Cordoba, Andalucia)", added Aemet.
However, from Friday (June 11) things look likely to change again when there will be "an increase in instability" that will lead to heavy cloud formations in the interior of mainland Spain.
Aemet is forecasting showers accompanied by thunderstorms, especially in mountainous and surrounding areas.
