Spain prepares civil protection 'war risk' guide as international tensions grow
Spain joins a long list of European countries preparing guidelines in case of Russian conflict
As international tensions escalate and Russia’s threats towards Europe and the US are being taken more and more seriously, Spain is developing its first-ever guide to help citizens respond to the risks associated with potential war.
According to sources from the Ministry of the Interior, the initiative is part of the Second National Civil Protection Strategy, approved by the National Security Council on October 15.
For the first time in the country’s history, the strategy includes guidance on how residents should prepare and respond in the event of a conflict affecting Spain.
Since the Russian invasion, Spain has played a significant role in supporting Ukraine, as a NATO member and one of the nations providing substantial aid to the war-torn country.
And while the guide's publication does not indicate in any way that Spain is on the brink of war, it nevertheless aims to equip the public with vital knowledge and instructions for navigating a worst-case scenario.
Spain’s decision mirrors similar steps taken by countries like Sweden, Norway and Finland, which have already distributed preparedness guides to their citizens. These resources outline actions to take during emergencies, including advice on self-protection and essential supplies.
Some of the recommendations in the ‘war risk’ guides include stocking up on non-perishable food, medicines and similar products to last at least a week.
Until now, Spain’s Civil Protection guides focused primarily on natural disasters and other non-conflict-related emergencies. The inclusion of war preparedness reflects the ever-growing tensions caused by Russia.
