ARCHIVED - Spain Covid update October 11: hospitalisations fall below 2,000 for the first time ever
The incidence rate continues to decline in Spain but 49 more people have lost their lives
As Spain and the rest of the world inch their way towards a state of new normal, restrictions are being eased around the country as a result of coronavirus indicators continuing their downward trend. According to the latest data released by the Ministry of Health on Monday October 11, the cumulative incidence rate, hospital admissions, Covid-related fatalities and new infections have all dropped over the last seven days.
Cumulative incidence rate
The 14-day figure has once again reduced to 46.08 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, down from 48.18 on Friday. Virtually all of the autonomous communities are seeing an improvement in the cumulative incidence, which is one of the strongest indicators that Spain is moving away from the fifth wave of the pandemic.
All of the regions in Spain have now dropped below 100 cases, while Asturias and Galicia remain the only two communities within the new normal range, with 15.7 and 16.58 cases per 100,000 respectively. La Rioja, Andalucía, Castilla y Leon and the Community of Valencia are also very close to breaking that barrier.
Coronavirus infections
A total of 3,829 new Covid infections were registered on Monday, 308 of which were diagnosed in the last 24 hours. This figure is considerably lower than on the same day last week, when 4,271 positives were reported. The total number of infections since the beginning of the pandemic in Spain stands at 4,977,448.
Between October 1 and 7, more than 604,000 antigen and PCR tests were carried out throughout the country, resulting in a 2.07% positivity rate. This is down from 2.14% on Friday and well under the 5% threshold at which the World Health Organisation (WHO) considers the virus to be ‘controlled’.
Hospitalisations and Fatalities
There are currently 1,942 patients admitted to hospital (down from 2,136 on Friday) with 507 people being treated in the ICU (down from 550 before the weekend). In the last 24 hours, 117 people have been discharged and the overall occupancy rate for Covid patients stands at just 1.6%.
A vital statistic for observing how the pandemic is evolving, Monday is the first time the number of admissions fell below 2,000 patients since the beginning of the pandemic.
Unfortunately, 49 new deaths were added to Monday’s health report, compared with 64 on the same day last week. In the last week, 79 people with coronavirus have died, bringing the overall death toll to 86,827.
Vaccination data
A total of 36,937,743 people, representing 87.7% of the target population, have now been fully immunised against Covid. In addition, 89.8% or 37,816,635 people have received at least one dose, 28,336 more than before the weekend.
