Smoking ban lifted on Alicante bar terraces
The Valencian Community was the last in the country to maintain the anti-Covid measure
Council ministers in the Valencian Community have decided on Wednesday August 2 to scrap the ban on smoking on outdoor bar, restaurant and cafe terraces, a measure that was introduced at the height of the coronavirus pandemic and which has remained in place ever since.
In fact, the provinces of Alicante, Valencia and Castellón were the last in Spain to keep the restriction in place.
From now on, hospitality owners will be able to choose whether or not to allow customers to smoke on their terraces.
The news will be welcomed by many in the industry who have been pleading with the regional government to lift the prohibition for months now, claiming that preventing patrons from having a cigarette outside was damaging business.
Hospitality bosses strenuously argued that the ban should have been lifted on July 4 this year, when the Council of Ministers declared an official end to the coronavirus health crisis.
The situation had caused a sticky legal conflict that will come to an end once the decision is published by the Valencian government.
