ARCHIVED - Shambles at Murcia City council over Christmas lights 2021
More expensive or cheaper? And when will the lights be switched on? No one seems to know…
Christmas lights in Murcia, 2019
Murcia City has come under fire for its handling of its Christmas lights this year, with detractors complaining that the light installations will be more expensive than ever and that the switch on may be pushed back.
In what feels like a repeat of 2019, when the city council was unable to confirm the light switch-on date and the final bill for the lighting came in over budget, opposition parties have blasted the authorities for both “delays in the installation of the lights and the arrival of the Christmas lights in the municipality” and “an increase in spending on Christmas decorations, which is almost double the amount planned and contracted in other years”.
For example, for each of the arches reading ‘Feliz Navidad’, which are usually located at the entrance or central streets of each neighbourhood of the city, the City Council has paid 521.43 euros this year, while the same company, Elecfes Iluminaciones, had budgeted the same sign at 240 euros to the district of El Palmar.
The local government has hit back at these criticisms, saying that that’s not a fair comparison as they are talking about budgets for slightly different decorations, and that the total contract, adding the lights in the centre and in the districts throughout the year, amounts to 1,162,000 euros, whereas in 2019 it was 1,144,000 euros, meaning they made a total saving of 20,000 euros.
In addition to the squabble over pricing, the City Council has prevaricated over the exact date that their Christmas lights will be turned on. While initial reports indicated it would be on Sunday December 5, there was some confusion as to whether it might be the previous Thursday or whether there would be delays to the announced switch-on.
