ARCHIVED - Seventh wave begins to recede: Spain Covid update July 29
The cumulative incidence rate in Spain has dropped more than 160 points

The latest report on the evolution of the coronavirus pandemic from Spain’s Ministry of Health brings some positive news as all of the important indicators have experienced a significant drop in recent days.
Coronavirus infections
The Ministry of Health in Spain registered a further 39,089 cases of coronavirus in the latest update, 19,403 of which were diagnosed in people over the age of 60.
This is a considerable decrease on the 72,704 infections registered in the last health report of July 26 and brings the total number of infections since the beginning of the pandemic to 13,203,228.
Cumulative incidence rate
The 14-day cumulative incidence rate in people over the age of 60 has fallen more than 160 points since the last report to stand at 694.73 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, compared to the 858.24 infections registered last Friday.
In the past two weeks, 85,577 positive infections have been registered in this age group.
Those over 80 years of age have the highest level of risk of contagion, with an incidence of 1,028 cases, followed by septuagenarians (709), while the lowest level of transmission recorded is that of those in their sixties (509). The incidence rate in all of these age groups has steadily declined in recent days.
The 7-day incidence also continues to decline, going from 326 cases to 274, which indicates that the number of infections should continue to drop in the coming days.
Andalusia continues to be the community with the lowest incidence rate by far, a trend which it has maintained throughout the seventh wave (276.22 cases). Eight regions remain above the 1,000-case threshold while Melilla is the highest in the country, with 2481.25 infections per 100,000 inhabitants.
Hospitalisations and fatalities
There are currently 9,826 patients hospitalised throughout Spain for Covid, compared to 10,489 on Friday, while 516 people are being treated for more serious conditions in the country’s ICUs, a reduction of three.
These figures mean that 8.23% of all hospital beds are occupied by Covid patients (down from 8.74%) while the occupancy rate in intensive care now stands at 5.91%.
A further 358 Covid-related fatalities have been reported this week, which brings the overall death toll since the start of the health crisis to 110,394.
Vaccination data
As of July 29, 92.7% of the population over the age of 12 is fully vaccinated against Covid, which means that a total of 39,125,695 people have now received two doses.
So far, 39,249,942 have received at least one dose, 93.0% of the population over 12 years of age, as well as 55.2% of children between 5 and 11 years of age, a total of 2,107,411.
