ARCHIVED - Scientists present 14-point roadmap to improve the Mar Menor
The action plan aims to achieve "very low levels" of nutrients in the Mar Menor by 2035
A team from the Segura Centre for Edaphology and Applied Biology has developed a detailed roadmap containing 14 measures that aim to achieve the sustainable development of the Mar Menor while at the same time promoting cooperation between the coastal and rural entities in the area.
The proposal includes pushing ecotourism activities, ensuring non-polluting agricultural practices by controlling the use of fertilisers, the maintenance of irrigation within legal limits and the start-up of small agrophotovoltaic plants.
The project, which includes both the Mar Menor and Campo de Cartagena, also allows the impact of these measures to be evaluated over time.
The 14 measures are as follows:
- Promotion of rural ecotourism activities
- Promotion of coastal ecotourism activities
- Implementation of nutrient, soil and water retention measures
- Reduction of fertilizers
- Denitrification of treated brine residues for irrigation
- Adaptation of the agricultural demand for water per hectare
- Control of the extension of irrigated agricultural areas
- Controlled extraction and treatment of groundwater
- Increase in the amount of desalinated seawater
- Controlled pumping and surface water treatment of the Rambla del Albujón
- Control of the number of underground water wells for irrigation
- Control of point sources of pollution in urban areas
- Promotion of small agrophotovoltaic installations
- Organization of environmental education activities.
In addition to the 14 general solutions, the roadmap includes 56 practical proposals, ranging from the creation of green corridors that connect places of interest with sustainable transport to the organisation of recreational activities in wetlands and salt flats through conservation and restoration projects.
Although huge cleaning efforts have improved the oxygen levels and water quality of the lagoon in recent days, the proposed measures should drastically reduce the excess nitrates still being washed into the Mar Menor.
“With the application of these solutions, the amount of nutrients accumulated in the lagoon could reach very low levels in 2035. If the roadmap is not implemented, a linear and sustained increase over time in the accumulated nutrients is expected”, the researchers explained.
