Saturday December 2 Lorca lights up for Christmas
The big switch-on will begin at 6.30pm in Lorca’s Plaza de España
Every corner of Lorca will sparkle this Christmas season and the big unveiling has been scheduled for this Saturday evening, December 2. This year, the City Council has installed 124 arches of lights in the centre, 87 in various neighbourhoods and 52 in the outlying districts.
More modest decorations will light up the smaller squares and streets with an overall investment of 152,600 euros.
The 20-meter star-topped luminous tree, located in the Plaza de España, “will be the jewel of the Christmas crown,” according to Councillor for Celebrations María de las Huertas García, who said that Saturday’s switch-on will kick off at 6.30pm with an exciting, gravity-defying show.
This ‘Floating Christmas’ performance, she explained, “will envelop us in the magic of Christmas, where light, projections, aerial dance and live music with a piano suspended at 10 metres will illuminate the eyes of whoever looks at it and that promises to fill the hearts of children and adults with magic and joy.”
There will also feature special performances by the Bartolomé Pérez Casas choir and the children of the Alfonso X el Sabio school, who have composed a Christmas carol in honour of the big night.
And from December 2, Lorca residents and visitors will also be able to get a bird’s-eye view of the lights from the 5-metre Ferris wheel in Plaza de España.
Councillor Antonio David Sánchez added that some of “the most prominent and striking decoration has been allocated to Avenida Juan Carlos I, the main commercial area of the city, as well as calles Corredera, Pío XII and Alporchones in the historic centre, with the objective of keeping the old area of our city alive, inviting everyone to enjoy Christmas in the most beautiful and monumental space in Lorca."
The street lights in Plaza de España and the façade of the Town Hall will also be decorated with Christmas motifs.
Ms García has invited everyone to attend the switch-on of the Christmas lighting: “This event marks the beginning of the Christmas season, in which we can gather with family and friends to enjoy together the lights that will illuminate our streets from Saturday, creating an atmosphere full of joy and Christmas spirit.
"We hope that these dates are unforgettable and that we can all together share the magic of Christmas in Lorca with all the activities that we have organised."
