ARCHIVED - Santa Pola bans feeding stray cats close to schools and health centre
The Town Hall has drawn up new regulations to control feral cat colonies in the Baix Vinalopo municipality
Santa Pola plans to ban the feeding of stray cats within 20 metres of schools, health centres and other public buildings as part of new regulations to control cat colonies in the municipality.
For years animal groups have been calling for Santa Pola to have a specific regulation to monitor populations and ensure the welfare of cat colonies, which it's hoped will be addressed with the proposed document.
It states that stray cat feeding points cannot be located within 20 metres of any educational, cultural, sports or health centre.
"Authorised colonies and feeding points must be on municipal property or public land", and not in the vicinity of cultural or tourist attractions, such as the castle-fortress Villa Adelaida, or archaeological sites.
Similarly, feral cat colonies and feeding points cannot be located in parks or children's play areas, and if placed on a public pavement, "must not obstruct the passage of pedestrians".
And written authorisation from the owner of any house or building must be given before food is left outside a property.

So-called colony managers will be responsible for ensuring all feeding points are hygienic, although the municipal pest control service will carry out periodic disinfection at cat colony locations
"The presence of a cat colony should not have a negative impact on the conditions of health, cleanliness and aesthetics in the physical environment," said the Town Hall, adding that once the regulations come into force, "any colony that does not meet the requirements will be moved progressively and monitored".
As well as the appointment of a colony manager, authorised feeders will be signed up, all on a voluntary basis.
The regulations, which were approved at the end of 2021, are currently on public display after initial approval, and open to comment.
