San Pedro steps up mosquito control after heavy rains
Parks, drains and storm tanks are all being sprayed to prevent mosquitoes

The recent heavy rains have brought a welcome boost to the Region of Murcia’s water supplies but they've also created a perfect storm for mosquito breeding.
To combat the potential threat of mosquito-borne diseases, the San Pedro del Pinatar Health Department has launched a targeted attack on the irritating insects, ramping up larvicidal control efforts in recent weeks.
Specialist teams have been working tirelessly to treat gardens, green areas, empty lots, canals, drains, grates and storm tanks with biological larvicides in an attempt to reduce mosquito proliferation.
According to Councillor Valentín Henarejos, this proactive approach is a crucial preventative measure, designed to safeguard the health and wellbeing of residents and wildlife alike.

However, there’s only so much the council can do as private properties can also be an ideal breeding ground for mosquitoes. Following periods of rain like we’ve just had, outbreaks can easily occur anywhere stagnant water gathers, such as flowerpots, poorly maintained swimming pools and unused fountains, to name but a few.
To prevent these pests from taking hold, residents are urged to take simple yet effective measures, such as removing containers with stagnant water, replacing pet water regularly and maintaining swimming pools properly.
Councillor Henarejos also took the opportunity to remind locals that, if there are any potential hot spots, residents can report them through the urban incident channel on the municipal website.
