San Pedro del Pinatar Council starts treatment for processionary caterpillars
The Town Council of San Pedro del Pinatar acts against the plague of the processionary caterpillar in the municipality
This year, the work to avoid the skin rash effects of the processionary caterpillar, which is the laval stage of the Pine processionary moth, has been brought forward due to the warm weather in recent months.
The Town Council of San Pedro del Pinatar is carrying out treatments in the coming weeks to combat the plague of the processionary caterpillar in the municipality. This is necessary work to avoid the stinging effects of this pest which can cause painful skin rashes in humans and in serious case cause fatality in dogs. The caterpillar hatches from the egg stage and appears, especially between the months of February and April, in areas where pine forests abound and which this year has come earlier due to the weather in recent months.
Work has been carried out against the processionary caterpillar in pine forest areas, especially on Calle Pablo Picasso, near the Dog Park, where the first appearances of this species have been seen. Preventive action is being taken before the hatching season arrive.
The Environmental Sustainability department acts jointly with the Parks and Gardens department and the Department of Animal Protection and Health, since the processionary caterpillar is highly toxic to dogs upon contact with their skin or mucous membranes.
This department is currently working on the processionary caterpillar nests in the pine trees of the municipality, also starting at Easter, treatments will begin to prevent mosquito infestations, which adversely affect Mediterranean towns especially when the heat and rain arrive.
San Pedro del Pinatar Council has set up an email for residents to report any sightings or incidents related to the processionary caterpillar in the municipality by email to processionaria@sanpedrodelpinatar.es.
