Ryanair bans duty-free booze on flights from the UK to top Spanish resorts

British holidaymakers jetting off to several Spanish resorts will have to do so on the dry this summer, since low-cost favourite Ryanair has issued a warning that passengers flying from the UK will not be allowed to drink any carry-on booze.

The airline implemented an alcohol restriction on British flights to the party destination of Ibiza several years ago, but in the interest of passenger safety and well-being, this has been extended to Alicante, Barcelona, Malaga, Palma and Tenerife South.

Upon booking their tickets, travellers have reported receiving the following message from Ryanair:

“In order to prioritize the comfort and safety of all passengers, Ryanair will implement the following restrictions on your upcoming flight to Spain:

“Customers will not be allowed to carry alcohol on board and all cabin baggage will be searched at the boarding gates.

“Any alcohol purchased in airport shops or elsewhere must be packed carefully in a suitable item of cabin baggage, which will be tagged at the gate and then placed in the aircraft hold free of charge if you have purchased priority boarding or have a small piece of hand luggage.”

This would mean that any holidaymakers stocking up on spirits or wine before they fly would have to check it in at the gate and collect their booze once they touch down in Spain.

Ryanair has issued a statement to say, “We are not ‘banning’ or ‘confiscating’ duty free alcohol at boarding gates. According to Ryanair’s terms and conditions, passengers may carry duty free alcohol on board, but must not consume it during the flight.”

It’s actually a criminal offence to be drunk on board an aircraft and any duty-free purchases are supposed to remain sealed until the flight lands, but this doesn’t stop travellers from routinely tucking in to their cheap alcohol and causing a ruckus.

Ryanair stressed that any customers caught trying to conceal alcohol or displaying any signs of anti-social behaviour would be denied boarding and wouldn’t be entitled to any refund or compensation.

When the carrier implemented the UK-Ibiza alcohol ban back in 2015 the Civil Aviation Authority welcomed the attempts of airlines to tackle booze-related issues on flights:

“We support UK airlines’ efforts to deal with disruptive passengers to ensure the safety of all those on board, and welcome criminal prosecutions where appropriate,” a CAA statement said at the time.
