ARCHIVED - Russian fugitive arrested in Torrevieja over million-euro tax fraud
The alleged fraudster detained in the Vega Baja town faces six years in prison in Russia
The National Police in Torrevieja have executed an international arrest warrant and detained a Russian fugitive wanted in his home country for the equivalent of one-million-euro tax evasion.
The 53-year-old was managing a company between January 1 2007 and December 31 2008, during which time he is accused of submitting false information to the local tax inspection office regarding the company's business activity, evading 32,859,628.88 rubles in taxes, the equivalent of 1,033,125 euros.
According to the international arrest warrant, the fugitive went on the run after his alleged offences came to light, and it was initially believed he was either still in Russia, or had fled to Israel where he has family.
However, new information came to light, and the International Fugitives Group, which belongs to the Central Brigade of Organised Crime of the General Commissariat of Judicial Police, sent a report to the Organised Crime Unit in Alicante informing them that the fugitive could be in hiding in Torrevieja.
Surveillance was set up in a built-up residential area of the coastal town and the detainee was eventually identified on the balcony of a block of flats.
Finally, on February 18, a "long and tense wait bore fruit", and armed with a court order, police arrested the Russian-on-the-run who has no previous record. His case is now in the hands of Torrevieja's Examining Magistrates' Court.
