ARCHIVED - Royal Academy of Engineering to advise on Mar Menor
A working group will analyse the actions required to recover the Mar Menor
The regional government of Murcia and the Royal Academy of Engineering have agreed to work together on the recovery of the Mar Menor, which has been deteriorating rapidly over the last number of years due in large part to agricultural run-off from surrounding farmland. The collaboration, officially signed-off on Wednesday November 24, will allow the engineering experts to advise on which projects and actions they believe will most benefit Europe’s largest saltwater lagoon.
To facilitate the recovery of the Mar Menor, a working group of experts will be created that will analyse the actions under consideration, in addition to the implementation of a scorecard system: a management tool that will facilitate decision-making as well as collecting indicators that will point towards the measures needed to save the lagoon.
The Minister of Water, Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and the Environment, Antonio Luengo, highlighted the fact that a roadmap of actions has already been developed through the Integrated Management Strategy for Coastal Zones of the Mar Menor, and reiterated that it is now “up to each of the administrations to carry out those that are within their competence, as soon as possible and in a coordinated manner, since it is the only way to recover the Mar Menor”.
The agreement with the Royal Academy of Engineering also aims to address the drought situation in the Region of Murcia and the advancing desertification of southeastern Spain as a whole.
