ARCHIVED - Residents of Los Nietos demand seafront promenade repairs
Locals claim that the state of the paving is a danger to elderly pedestrians
The news that a million euros is to be spent on finally completing the seafront promenade in Los Urrutias has been welcomed by residents on the inland shore of the Mar Menor, but at the same time it is reported to have heightened the frustration of those living in Los Nietos, where their own promenade is still awaiting repair and refurbishment work.
The Asociación de Vecinos (neighbours’ association) of Los Nietos reports that four requests have been made over the last nine months for a meeting with Ana Belén Castejón the outgoing Mayoress of Cartagena, to discuss the matter, but that no reply has been received despite Sra Castejón having presented plans for the work during her election campaign two years ago.
Locals claim that the state of the paving on the seafront walk is so bad that it constitutes a danger for the elderly, and that it is over a decade since the last repair work was carried out. However, neither the Town Hall nor the national Ministry of Ecological Transition has yet produced plans or a timeframe in which to perform more repairs and maintenance, and neither has a budget for the project been drawn up.
